Hill Villa

A long, low house for a family of five on a sloping site under Nandi Hills, built in local stone and designed to disappear into its orchard.

White single-storey house among pine trees under a clear sky

The site slopes gently south with views to the hills and a mango orchard the owners refused to touch. The house is a single storey, almost sixty metres long, stepping down the slope in three terraces so that no tree is lost and every room has the hills on one side and the orchard on the other.

Walls are random-rubble granite from quarries within twenty kilometres, laid by masons from the nearby village; the roof is a thin folded slab that reads as a single line against the hill. A lap pool runs along the lowest terrace, fed by rainwater, and the house is planned to run off-grid for electricity by its second year.

Structure is complete and stonework is under way. We publish fortnightly progress reports, drone surveys and drawing revisions to the owners through our client studio, which matters when the family lives in Singapore and the site is an hour from the city.
